The 2026 Local SEO Playbook: Owning the map pack

The three-result map pack is where local buyers decide. Here is the system that puts you in it and keeps you there.

01Part one

Master your Google Business Profile

The map pack is decided by three things Google has never stopped weighting: relevance, distance, and prominence. Your Google Business Profile is where you control the first and third. Pick the most specific primary category that matches your money service, then add secondary categories for everything else you do. Fill every field: services with descriptions, service areas, hours, attributes, and a real, keyword-honest business description. Load genuine photos monthly, because active profiles outperform dormant ones.

Reviews are the prominence lever most businesses underuse. Volume matters, but recency and velocity matter more in 2026, so a steady drip of new reviews beats a big cluster from two years ago. Ask every satisfied customer, make it one tap with a short link, and reply to every review, positive or negative, using natural language that mentions the service and city. Post to your profile weekly with offers and updates to keep the account signaling that you are open and active.

02Part two

Build the pages and citations that back it up

Your profile needs a website that confirms everything it claims. Build a dedicated page for each service and each location you serve, with unique content, not spun templates, and mark each up with LocalBusiness schema carrying your exact name, address, phone, and geo-coordinates. Embed a map, list real hours, and answer the questions a local buyer actually asks. These pages give Google the relevance signals the profile alone cannot, and they are what rank in the organic results directly under the pack.

Then lock down consistency and authority. Your name, address, and phone must be byte-for-byte identical across your site, Google, Apple Maps, Bing, and the core directories, because mismatched citations quietly erode trust. Build citations on the platforms that matter for your industry, earn local backlinks from chambers, suppliers, and press, and keep it current. Consistency plus recency is what separates the businesses that hold the pack from the ones that flicker in and out of it.

03Questions

Local SEO questions

How long does it take to rank in the map pack?

For a well-optimized profile in a moderately competitive market, expect meaningful movement in about two to four months. Reviews and citations compound over time, so the businesses that start earning them consistently now are the ones holding the top three a year from now.

Does my exact business address matter if I serve a wide area?

Yes. Proximity to the searcher still drives ranking, so you rank strongest near your verified address. Service-area businesses can hide the address and set service areas, then build individual location pages to extend relevance into the surrounding cities you want to win.
