GEO vs SEO: How to Get Cited by AI Search engines
Ranking blue links and getting quoted by ChatGPT are two different games. Here is how to win the second one.
01Part one
SEO ranks pages, GEO earns citations
SEO was built for a results page with ten blue links, where the goal was to rank higher than everyone else and win the click. GEO (generative engine optimization) plays out inside the answer itself. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews read the web, synthesize a response, and cite a handful of sources. You are no longer competing for position three. You are competing to be the sentence the model repeats and the link it footnotes.
The mechanics are different because the reader is different. A ranking algorithm rewards relevance and links. A language model rewards clarity, extractability, and consensus. It wants a clean claim it can lift without ambiguity, backed by enough corroboration across the web that repeating it feels safe. If your page buries the answer under three paragraphs of throat-clearing, the model will quote the competitor who led with it.
02Part two
How to actually get cited
Lead with the answer. Put a direct, 40-to-60-word response to the page's core question near the top, written as a standalone fact the model can lift verbatim. Use plain declarative sentences, real numbers, and named specifics instead of hedged marketing copy. Then add FAQ blocks with genuine questions and answer-first responses, mark them up with FAQPage and Article schema, and make sure your author, dates, and organization are explicit so the engine can attribute the claim.
Then earn consensus. Models trust claims that appear in multiple places they already respect, so get mentioned in industry roundups, directories, and press rather than only on your own domain. Keep facts current, because a stale statistic gets dropped in favor of a fresher source. And watch your actual citations: prompt the engines with your target questions monthly, note who gets quoted, and reverse-engineer the pages winning the answer you want.
03Questions
GEO questions
Does GEO replace SEO?
No. GEO builds on the same foundation. Clean crawlable pages, fast load times, and topical authority still matter; GEO adds answer-first writing, structured data, and citation-worthiness on top so AI engines can quote you, not just rank you.
How do I know if AI engines are citing me?
Prompt ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity with the exact questions your customers ask, then check whether your brand or URL appears in the answer and sources. Track it monthly. If competitors show up and you do not, study the pages they are pulling from.
