AI SEO: How to Get Your Business Found and Cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews

AI SEO is the work of making your business easy for AI search tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews to find, trust, quote and recommend. It is not a separate discipline from SEO. It is SEO with a second reader in mind: a machine that pulls a few clear sentences from your page and decides whether to name you in its answer.

AI SEO: an AI search answer citing three source websites on a laptop screen
AI engines quote a few clear passages and cite their sources. AI SEO is how you become one of them.

Key takeaways

  • AI SEO starts with classic SEO: Google says a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet before it can appear as a link in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
  • AI engines quote passages, not pages. Answer the question in the first sentence of every section and keep each passage self-contained.
  • Trust signals decide who gets named: real authors, consistent business facts across the web, reviews and specific first-hand detail.
  • Check your robots.txt and firewall. ChatGPT search needs OAI-SearchBot allowed, and plenty of sites block it by accident.
  • Measure it: Search Console counts AI feature clicks in Web search, GA4 shows AI referrals, and a fixed prompt panel shows whether you are being named.

What AI SEO actually is (and what it is not)

AI SEO means optimizing your site and your wider web presence so AI-generated answers include your business, your facts and a link back to you. The goal shifts from "rank a page" to "be the source the answer is built from."

The mechanics overlap heavily with traditional search. Google's own Google Search Central guidance on AI features says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimizations are necessary. The same fundamentals apply: crawlable pages, indexable content, useful answers, a trustworthy site.

What changes is how your content gets used. A classic results page shows ten links and lets the searcher choose. An AI answer reads several sources, writes its own summary, and cites a handful of them. If your page is vague, buried in scripts, or says the same thing as everyone else, the model has no reason to pick it.

You will also hear GEO (generative engine optimization) and AEO (answer engine optimization). They describe the same family of work from slightly different angles. We break down the overlap in GEO vs SEO and go deeper on answer-first writing in our guide to answer engine optimization.

How AI engines choose which sources to cite

Most AI search tools follow the same four steps: they retrieve candidate pages from an index, pull the passages that best match the question, write an answer, and attach citations to the sources that supported it. You can influence the first two steps directly, and the last two follow from them.

  1. Retrieval. The engine searches an index. For Google that is the Google index. For ChatGPT search it is content its search crawler is allowed to reach. If you are not in the index, nothing else matters.
  2. Passage selection. The engine looks for chunks of text that answer the question cleanly. A paragraph that opens with the answer beats a paragraph that warms up for three sentences first.
  3. Synthesis. The model combines what several sources say. Facts that appear consistently across many sources (your hours, your service area, what you specialize in) are treated as safer to repeat.
  4. Attribution. The engine links the sources it leaned on. Distinct, specific claims are easier to attribute than generic advice that every site repeats.

That is why information gain matters so much in AI SEO. If your page says exactly what the other nine pages say, the model can write the answer without you. If your page has a framework, a checklist, a local detail or a number nobody else has, you become hard to leave out.

Why platforms cite different sources

Google AI Overviews lean on Google's index and ranking systems, so strong organic rankings tend to carry over. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot use their own retrieval and often pull from forums, directories, review sites and news. The practical takeaway: you cannot win every engine with your website alone. Your profiles, reviews and mentions elsewhere are part of the job.

The 11 AI SEO best practices that earn citations

These are the eleven practices we apply on every AI SEO engagement, in roughly the order we apply them. The first four are foundations. Skip them and the rest will not stick.

1. Make sure the right bots can reach you

Check robots.txt, your CDN and any security plugin. According to OpenAI's crawler documentation, sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. We regularly find bot-protection settings blocking it with nobody aware of the choice.

2. Get indexed and snippet-eligible

Google requires a page to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet before it can be a supporting link in AI features. A stray nosnippet or noindex removes you. Run the technical SEO checklist before anything else.

3. Put the answer in the first sentence

Open every page and every section with a one- or two-sentence direct answer. Then explain. This single habit does more for AI SEO than any other writing change.

4. Write self-contained passages

A passage should make sense if it is lifted out on its own. Name the subject instead of saying "it" or "this." Avoid "as mentioned above." AI engines quote chunks, not whole pages.

5. Use structure a machine can quote

Numbered steps, comparison tables, definitions and short lists are easy to extract. A wall of prose is not. Use real HTML headings and lists, not styled divs.

6. Add something the top results do not have

A worked example, your own checklist, a decision table, a local rule. Generic content is summarized without credit. Specific content gets cited.

7. Show who wrote it and why they know

Google's guidance on helpful, reliable, people-first content says trust is the most important part of E-E-A-T. Put a real author on the page, with a bio and credentials, and include first-hand detail only someone who has done the work would know.

8. Keep your business facts identical everywhere

Name, address, phone, hours, services and service area should match across your site, Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles. Conflicting facts make a model hedge or skip you.

9. Mark up what is on the page

Use schema.org markup for your organization, local business, articles, FAQs and products. Google says no special schema is required for AI features and that markup should match visible text, so treat it as clarity, not a trick.

10. Earn mentions off your site

Reviews, local press, association listings, podcast appearances and well-run forum answers all feed the sources AI engines read. A business mentioned positively in many places is easier to recommend.

11. Keep pages current

Update dates, numbers and screenshots when they change, and say when the page was last reviewed. Stale facts are a reason to cite someone else.

The AI SEO readiness checklist we run on every site

Before we write a single new page, we score the existing site against five layers. We call it the Reach, Read, Trust, Quote, Prove check. Each layer has a pass or fail test, and any fail gets fixed before content work starts.

LayerThe questionHow we test itCommon fail
ReachCan AI crawlers get to the page?robots.txt, CDN bot rules, server logs for Googlebot and OAI-SearchBotFirewall blocking AI search bots
ReadIs the content in the HTML?View source and URL Inspection; check text is not loaded only by JavaScript or hidden in tabsService details inside sliders and accordions that render late
TrustWould a skeptic believe this page?Author, bio, reviews, consistent business facts, real photos, contact detailsNo byline, stock photos, three different phone numbers
QuoteCan a passage stand on its own?Read the first sentence of each section in isolationSections that open with a story or a rhetorical warm-up
ProveIs there something only you could say?Compare against the top five results for the querySame advice, same order, same examples as everyone else

Quick self-test (10 minutes)

  • Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the three questions your best customers ask before they buy. Note who gets named.
  • Open your robots.txt and search for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, Google-Extended and a blanket Disallow: /.
  • Pick your top service page. Does the first sentence say what you do, where, and for whom?
  • Google your business name. Do the phone number and hours match on every result?

A note on GPTBot versus OAI-SearchBot: they do different jobs. OpenAI documents GPTBot as the crawler for model training and OAI-SearchBot as the one that surfaces sites in ChatGPT search. You can block training and still allow search. Many owners block both without realizing it.

A worked example: rewriting a service page for AI SEO

The fastest AI SEO win on most sites is rewriting the top of the pages that already rank. Here is the pattern, using a typical home-services page as the example.

Before

Welcome to our company! For over 15 years we have been passionate about providing top-quality service to our valued customers. Our team of experts is committed to excellence, and we pride ourselves on going above and beyond.

Nothing in that passage answers a question. A model cannot quote it, and a customer learns nothing. Every competitor could paste it onto their own site.

After

We repair and replace residential air conditioning systems in Broward and Palm Beach counties, with same-day service calls booked until 2 p.m. on weekdays. Every technician is licensed and background-checked, and every estimate is written before work starts.

Now the first sentence states the service, the place and a specific commitment. The second gives two trust facts. Each sentence can be lifted into an answer to "who does same-day AC repair in Broward County" and still make sense.

Then add the supporting blocks

  • A short FAQ answering the five questions your phone team hears most, each answer 40 to 80 words.
  • A table comparing repair versus replacement by system age and symptom.
  • A named author or reviewer with a line on their experience.
  • LocalBusiness and FAQ markup that matches the visible text.

The specifics in this example are placeholders. Use only claims you can stand behind. Made-up details are worse than vague ones, because AI engines cross-check and customers notice.

How to measure AI SEO results

Measure AI SEO with three numbers: whether you are named, whether people click through, and whether those visits turn into calls and forms. Rankings alone no longer tell the story.

1. A fixed prompt panel

Write 20 to 30 prompts your buyers would really type, such as "best family dentist in Montclair NJ" or "who installs commercial roofs in Fort Lauderdale." Run the same list monthly in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode. Record whether you are named, linked, or absent, and which competitors appear. Keep the wording identical so the trend is real.

2. Search Console and GA4

Google says clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in Search Console's overall Web search traffic, so they show up there rather than in a separate report. In GA4, build a custom channel group for referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com so AI traffic is not lost inside "Referral."

3. Leads by source

Traffic is not the goal. Tie calls, forms and bookings back to the channel that produced them. Our own platform, UnifiedIQ, scores every page for SEO and tracks every call and form back to its source, which is how we tell clients whether AI visibility is producing business or just impressions. Each week it also asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Overviews the questions a client's buyers ask, and records whether the brand is mentioned or cited and which competitors appear instead. If you run reporting in-house, our analytics and reporting team can set up the same attribution.

AI SEO mistakes we see every month

Most AI SEO problems we inherit are self-inflicted. These are the ones we fix most often.

  • Treating llms.txt as a ranking switch. The file is a proposal documented at llmstxt.org for giving AI tools a curated Markdown map of your site. It is cheap to add, and we do add it, but Google says you do not need AI text files to appear in its AI features. Read our plain-English guide to llms.txt before paying anyone to "install" it.
  • Publishing AI-written filler at volume. Hundreds of near-identical pages give a model nothing new to cite and can drag down how the whole site is judged.
  • Blocking the crawlers you need. One blanket bot rule can remove you from ChatGPT search overnight.
  • Schema that does not match the page. FAQ markup for questions that are not visible, or review stars with no reviews on the page, erodes trust.
  • Hiding the answer behind design. Tabs, carousels and "read more" toggles that load content late make extraction harder.
  • Ignoring off-site facts. An old address on a directory or a wrong category on your Google Business Profile can outweigh a perfect page.
  • Measuring only rankings. You can hold position three and still lose clicks to an AI answer that names a competitor.

Your 30-day AI SEO plan

If we were starting your AI SEO from zero on Monday, this is the order we would work in. It front-loads the fixes that unblock everything else.

  1. Week 1: Reach and Read. Audit robots.txt, CDN and plugin bot rules. Confirm your key pages are indexed and snippet-eligible. Make sure core content is in the HTML. Run your baseline prompt panel.
  2. Week 2: Trust. Add real author bios and a clear About page. Align your name, address, phone, hours and services across your site, Google Business Profile and top directories. Add Organization and LocalBusiness markup.
  3. Week 3: Quote. Rewrite the first paragraph and section openers on your ten highest-traffic pages. Add a short FAQ to each, using questions from your sales and support teams.
  4. Week 4: Prove. Publish one genuinely original piece: a checklist you use, a cost-factor table, a local guide. Pitch it to one trade publication or association. Set up the GA4 AI channel group and lead attribution.

Then repeat the prompt panel at day 30 and day 60. Expect movement on Google first, since AI Overviews lean on pages that already rank. Standalone chat assistants usually take longer because they depend more on mentions across the web.

For local businesses, pair this with the Google Business Profile work in our local SEO playbook. Many AI answers to "near me" questions draw on Maps data and reviews as much as on websites.

When to bring in an AI SEO partner

You can run the 30-day plan yourself if you have someone who can edit your site, read Search Console and write clearly. Bring in help when the fixes are technical, the site is large, or nobody has time to keep it current.

Our AI search optimization service sits inside our wider search practice, alongside traditional SEO, local SEO and technical audits. One in-house team handles the site, the content and the tracking, and senior specialists run every account.

Scale is where structure pays off. For Nusbaum Medical Centers we have 3,066 pages live, 1,285 search terms ranking on Google and 137 page-one rankings, with 1,645 tracked inquiries in the past 12 months. For HonestyInsure.com we built 144 pages and guides that are indexed, including 31 state pages, plus a 24/7 AI agent chat in the hero. Clean, answer-first pages like these are exactly what AI engines draw on.

If you want a second opinion first, ask for a free review through our contact page. We will run the Reach, Read, Trust, Quote, Prove check on your top pages and tell you what we would fix first. Want to go deeper on one engine? Start with how to rank in ChatGPT.

AI SEO questions, answered

Is AI SEO different from regular SEO?

Mostly no. AI SEO builds on the same foundations: crawlable, indexed, trustworthy pages with useful answers. The difference is emphasis. AI engines quote passages, so answer-first writing, self-contained sections, consistent business facts and original detail matter more than they did when search showed only ten blue links. Our SEO and AI search work run as one program for that reason.

Do I need an llms.txt file for AI SEO?

No. Google says you do not need new machine-readable files or AI text files to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. llms.txt is a proposed standard that some AI tools may read. It is quick to add and harmless, so we include it, but it is not a substitute for clear content and clean technical SEO.

How long does AI SEO take to show results?

Technical fixes like unblocking crawlers can matter within weeks once pages are recrawled. Content rewrites usually show up in Google AI Overviews first, because they draw on pages that already rank. Being recommended by standalone assistants like ChatGPT tends to take months, because it depends on reviews, mentions and citations across the web.

Can I track traffic from ChatGPT and AI Overviews?

Partly. Google counts AI Overview and AI Mode clicks inside Search Console's Web search traffic. In GA4, referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and similar domains appear as referral traffic, which you can group into a custom AI channel. Pair that with call and form tracking so you see leads, not only visits.

Should I block AI bots from my website?

Block training if you want, but allow search. OpenAI separates GPTBot, used for training, from OAI-SearchBot, used to show sites in ChatGPT search. Blocking OAI-SearchBot removes you from ChatGPT search answers. Review your robots.txt and firewall rules together, because security tools often block bots without anyone noticing.

Does schema markup help AI SEO?

It helps machines understand what is on the page, which supports AI SEO, but it is not a shortcut. Google says no special schema is needed for its AI features and that structured data should match the visible text. Use Organization, LocalBusiness, Article and FAQ markup accurately, and never mark up content visitors cannot see.
