Shopify stores built to sell.
Custom Shopify themes, fewer apps, faster product pages and a catalog Google can read, built by the team that also runs your search and ads.
01Overview
Shopify development that goes past the theme store
Shopify development starts where the theme editor stops. Shopify gives you hosting, checkout, payments and a solid admin out of the box. What it cannot give you is a storefront shaped around your products, your buyers and the way you actually sell. That is the gap good Shopify development fills: the templates, sections, integrations and data work that turn a generic store into one that earns its traffic.
Unified Marketing has built websites and stores since 2006 for more than 1,100 businesses. We design in a clickable prototype through our website design process, then build with the same no-shortcuts approach as our website development: lean code, only what each page needs, and nothing a future developer would struggle to read.
What Shopify development usually includes
- Custom theme builds or deep customization of an existing theme, written in Liquid, CSS and JavaScript.
- Editable sections and blocks so your team can build landing pages, collection intros and promotions without code.
- Product data structure: variants, metafields, filters and collections that match how customers shop.
- App audits and replacements, swapping heavy apps for theme code where it makes sense.
- Integrations with your CRM, email, reviews, ERP or fulfillment tools.
- Migrations from WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce or a hosted builder, with products, customers, orders and redirects.
- Search and feeds: product schema, technical SEO and Google Merchant Center.
02Themes vs custom
Theme, customized theme or custom Shopify build
Shopify's theme architecture documentation describes how a theme fits together: a layout file wraps every page, JSON templates hold sections, sections hold blocks, and merchants can add, remove and reorder those sections and blocks in the theme editor. Every Shopify development decision comes down to how much of that structure you buy ready-made and how much you build for your catalog.
| Option | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Theme Store theme, configured | New stores, small catalogs, testing a product | Looking like every other store on the same theme; features added by stacking apps |
| Customized theme | Stores with a proven theme that needs new sections, better product pages or speed work | Edits that make theme updates hard; we document every change |
| Custom theme | Brands with a distinct look, large or complex catalogs, content-heavy marketing | More upfront design and build time, repaid in speed and flexibility |
| Headless storefront | Large brands needing a fully custom front end or multiple storefronts | Higher build and maintenance effort; rarely the right first step |

For most growing brands, the sweet spot for Shopify development is a custom theme or a heavily customized one. You keep Shopify's admin, checkout and hosting, and get product pages, collections and landing pages built around your products instead of a demo store.
What you can and cannot change at checkout
Checkout is the one area where plan level matters. Shopify's checkout settings help says standard checkout customizations, including branding and eligible apps on the thank you and order status pages, are available on the Basic plan or higher. Advanced customization of the information, shipping and payment steps, and the Checkout Branding API, are available only on Shopify Plus. We tell you which side of that line your idea sits on before it goes into a design.
Most checkout wins happen before checkout: clear shipping costs and delivery dates on the product page, fewer surprises in the cart, and trust signals at the point of decision.
03Why Unified
Why brands choose Unified for Shopify development.
We build stores for the traffic that will reach them, because the same team runs that traffic.
Custom where it counts
We build custom Shopify themes and sections around your catalog, not a demo store. Your team gets flexible blocks for promotions and landing pages, and customers get product pages designed around the questions they ask before buying. Every section is documented so the store stays easy to run.
Fewer apps, faster pages
Our Shopify development work treats every storefront app as a cost. We audit what you run, replace simple apps with theme code, and keep the ones that earn their weight, so pages stay quick on the phones your customers use.
Honest platform advice
We build on WordPress and WooCommerce as well as Shopify, so we can tell you plainly which fits your catalog, content and team, including the fees, limits and URL rules that matter before you commit. If Shopify is the wrong fit, we will tell you before any work begins.
Built to be found
Merchant Center feeds, product schema, technical SEO and conversion tracking are part of the build, not an add-on. The team that writes the theme also runs SEO, Google Ads and paid social for stores like yours. Every sale and lead is reported by source in UnifiedIQ.
04Apps and speed
Shopify apps, speed and the hidden cost of extras
Apps are one of Shopify's biggest strengths. Shopify's own comparison page lists more than 21,000 apps in its App Store. They are also the most common reason a store slows down, and the first thing our Shopify development audits look at. Each storefront app can add scripts, styles and network requests to every page, and the costs stack quietly. Six apps doing small jobs can weigh more than the whole theme.
The app audit we run on every store
- List every installed app and what it touches: storefront, admin only, checkout or back office.
- Measure the storefront cost of each one on product and collection pages, on a mid-range phone.
- Find overlap. Two review apps, three popups and a leftover upsell tool are common.
- Replace simple apps with theme code: size charts, badges, announcement bars, FAQ tabs and basic bundles rarely need a subscription.
- Keep the apps that earn their weight: subscriptions, reviews with real volume, loyalty, search on large catalogs, and back-office tools that never load on the storefront.
- Clean up leftovers. Uninstalled apps can leave code in theme files; we remove it.
The speed target for Shopify development is the same as any site we build. Google's Core Web Vitals define good as Largest Contentful Paint of 2.5 seconds or less, Interaction to Next Paint of 200 milliseconds or less and Cumulative Layout Shift of 0.1 or less, measured at the 75th percentile. Our Core Web Vitals guide explains each metric. Image-heavy product pages, carousels and late-loading review widgets are where Shopify stores usually fail them.
05Shopify vs WooCommerce
Shopify vs WooCommerce: an honest comparison
We build on both, so we have no reason to oversell either. Our team built the WordPress and WooCommerce store for Marc Anthony True Professional, a hair care brand selling across the US and Canada, with collection banners, complete-your-look cross-sells and a salon section, then handed it to the brand's in-house developer. Here is how the two platforms compare before you commit to Shopify development for a typical growing store.
| Factor | Shopify | WooCommerce on WordPress |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting | Included and managed by Shopify | You choose, pay for and manage hosting |
| Security and PCI | Shopify says stores are PCI DSS Level 1 compliant by default | Your host, plugins and updates carry the responsibility |
| Checkout | Fast, trusted, limited changes below Plus | Fully customizable, and fully your responsibility |
| Payments | Shopify Payments, or third-party gateways with an extra Shopify transaction fee | Many gateways; WooCommerce states the core has no platform fees, while processors still charge their own |
| Extensions | App Store with review and billing through Shopify | Plugins and paid extensions from many vendors |
| Content and SEO | Good for products; blog and content tools are basic | Strongest for content-heavy sites and complex SEO structures |
| URL control | Fixed prefixes like /products/ and /collections/ | Fully flexible permalinks |
| Ownership | Hosted platform on a subscription | Open source; you own the code and the server |
| Best fit | Stores where selling is the core of the business | Content-led brands, unusual product logic or deep WordPress needs |
Two details matter more than they look. Shopify's payments help confirms that third-party transaction fees apply to orders processed through third-party and alternate gateways, even if Shopify Payments is also active. And because Shopify uses fixed URL paths, every product and collection URL changes in a move from WooCommerce. If your store is mostly content with a few products, our WordPress website design work may fit better.
Migrating to Shopify without losing search traffic
- Export every product, collection, page, blog and image URL from the old store, plus top landing pages from analytics and Search Console.
- Map each one to its new Shopify URL and load the map through Shopify's URL redirect import. Shopify notes that a redirect only works when the old URL no longer loads a live page, so we test after products are live.
- Move product descriptions, reviews, alt text and metafields, not just titles and prices.
- Recreate customer accounts and order history where needed, and plan how customers set new passwords.
- Rebuild GA4, ad conversion tracking and Merchant Center before launch, and watch Search Console daily after.
06Get found and hire well
Merchant Center, SEO and a Shopify development plan
A store nobody finds does not need a better theme. Shopify's Google and YouTube channel syncs products to Google Merchant Center, and for eligible US stores synced products can appear in the Google Shopping tab for free. The feed is only as good as the product data. Google's product data specification requires an ID, title, description, link, image link, price and availability, and strongly recommends a valid GTIN when one exists. Brand is required for most new products.
We pair the feed with on-page product markup. Google's product structured data guide says using both Merchant Center feeds and merchant listing markup improves eligibility and helps Google verify product data. Then our SEO team handles collections, internal links and content, and our AI SEO work makes product and buying-guide pages easy for AI answers to cite. Stores with a showroom should also read how to rank higher on Google Maps.
| Phase | Typical length | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery and audit | 1 to 2 weeks | Analytics, app and speed audit, catalog structure, URL map if migrating |
| Design | 2 to 4 weeks | Clickable prototype of home, collection, product, cart and key landing pages |
| Theme build | 3 to 6 weeks | Liquid sections and blocks, metafields, integrations, app replacements |
| Data and migration | 1 to 3 weeks, in parallel | Products, customers, orders, redirects, Merchant Center feed |
| QA and launch | 1 to 2 weeks | Device, speed, checkout and tracking tests, go-live, daily monitoring |
Questions to ask any Shopify developer
- Will you build a custom theme or customize an existing one, and can our team still update it?
- Which of our current apps would you remove, and what replaces them?
- How do you test product, collection and cart pages for speed on mobile?
- If we are migrating, who builds and tests the redirect map?
- How will Merchant Center, product schema and conversion tracking be set up?
- Who supports the store after launch?
Red flags
- Every feature request answered with another app.
- Theme files edited directly on the live theme with no copy or version history.
- A migration plan that never mentions redirects or Search Console.
- Checkout changes promised that your Shopify plan does not allow.
- No plan for product data, feeds or tracking.
Our national brand work goes back years, from the Marc Anthony store to the US media campaign for Nu Skin's ageLOC system. On the content side, Joe Sale Photography sells fine-art prints with their own pages on a custom theme with 50 SEO landing pages, every one scoring 99 to 100. Every store we build reports sales and leads by source in UnifiedIQ. 07How we work
How a Shopify development project runs.
Audit the store, prototype the experience, build lean, launch with data in place.
- Step 01
Audit
We review your analytics, apps, speed, catalog structure and current theme, and if you are migrating, inventory every URL. You get a clear plan covering theme approach, app changes, data work and anything your Shopify plan limits.
- Step 02
Prototype
We design the home, collection, product, cart and landing page templates as a clickable prototype on desktop and mobile, built around real products. You approve the experience before any Liquid is written. Product, cart and collection pages get the most attention, because they make the money.
- Step 03
Build
Our Shopify development team codes the theme in Liquid with editable sections and blocks, sets up metafields and filters, replaces unneeded apps, and connects integrations, all on an unpublished theme so the live store keeps selling.
- Step 04
Launch and grow
We test devices, speed, checkout, redirects and tracking, publish the theme, connect Merchant Center and monitor daily. Then SEO, ads and conversion work build on a store designed for them. Every result is reported against your pre-launch baseline.

10Questions
Shopify development questions, answered.
Do I need a custom Shopify theme?
Not always. A configured Theme Store theme works for new stores and small catalogs. A custom or heavily customized theme pays off when you have a distinct brand, a large or complex catalog, content-heavy marketing, or a store slowed down by apps doing jobs the theme should do.
Can my team edit the store after you build it?
Yes. Our Shopify development work uses Shopify sections and blocks so your team can create landing pages, reorder content, change promotions and update collections in the theme editor without touching code. We document the theme and train whoever runs the store.
Can you customize Shopify checkout?
Partly, depending on your plan. Shopify allows standard checkout branding and eligible apps on thank you and order status pages from the Basic plan up. Advanced changes to the information, shipping and payment steps require Shopify Plus. We confirm what your plan allows before designing anything.
Should I move from WooCommerce to Shopify?
Move if you want hosting, security and checkout handled for you and selling is the core of your business. Stay on WooCommerce if you depend on deep content, custom product logic or full URL control. Every product and collection URL changes in the move, so redirects must be planned.
How do you migrate a store without losing rankings?
We export every URL, map each to its new Shopify address, import the redirects, move descriptions, reviews and alt text, rebuild tracking and Merchant Center before launch, then watch Search Console daily. Shopify redirects only work once the old URL no longer loads, so we test them after go-live.
Will you set up Google Shopping?
We connect Shopify's Google and YouTube channel to Merchant Center, clean product data to Google's specification, and add product structured data to product pages. Ads campaigns are run by our Google Ads team if you want paid Shopping on top of free listings.
What does Shopify development cost?
It depends on scope: theme approach, catalog size, integrations and whether you are migrating. We scope every project after a short audit so the estimate matches your store, not a package. We do not publish price lists. The audit itself tells you where speed, apps and data are costing you sales.
